Apulien, 1959: Frauen in weißen Kleidern tanzen ekstatisch in einer kleinen Kapelle. Sie springen herum, wälzen sich auf demBoden und klettern auf den Altar. Man nennt sie „Tarantate“ und sagt, dass sie an einem giftigen Spinnenbiss leiden. Ihr „Tanzwahn“erfordert einen rituellen Exorzismus mit Musik.
Der Essay TARANTISM REVISITED arrangiert Stimmen aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart mit umfangreichem Archivmaterial einstigerForschungsreisen zu einer komplexen Komposition. Eine einzigartige Korrespondenz zwischen einer „Tarantata“ und der Forscher in Annabella Rossi schlängelt sich als roter Faden durch den Film. Auch heute besteht der einst als „weibliche Raserei” verunglimpfteTarantismus weiter – auch als Ausdruck des Aufbegehrens gegen patriarchale Strukturen.

BIOGRAPHY
Anja Dreschke is a visual and media anthropologist, filmmaker, and curator based in Cologne (D). Currently she is a guest professor for time-based-media/theory at the Berlin University of Arts.
Michaela Schäubleis professor for social anthropology with a focus on media anthropology at the University of Bern (CH) where she also co-directs EMB-Ethnographic Mediaspace Bern.
