RAPGALSENE – WORDPOWER FROM SENEGAL
Lukas May | Germany, Senegal 2007 | 57 Min. | OmeU
Dakar, Senegal. Since the late eighties one of the biggest Rap-Scenes of the world emerged here. Rap in Senegal gives a lot of young people the possibility to express themselves in the public about their often difficult situation and that of their country. “It’s the music, which allows to express things as they are” (Xuman). The documentary “RapGalsene” – that’s how the rappers call their music themselves – allows an insight into the movement, the music, their representatives and their perceptions. The male and female rappers express themselves about different subjects like tradition, religion, woman in the scene, the future of the Senegalese Rap and many other questions.
