A group of hooligans cling to the success of their soccer team as if their lives depended on it. The meager everyday life in impoverished Pernik, Bulgaria, does not offer them much more. They carry the pride of the once flourishing industrial center and cherish the myth of the bravery of their former miners. Their usual lifestyle, however, gets challenged when one of their members, single father and skinhead Tsetso, falls ill, and the decaying city faces a grave water crisis.
Nikolay Stefanov’s camera is always in the middle of the action, exploring with openness and genuine human curiosity the social milieu of hooligans who desperately hold on to an outdated worldview and a long-faded past in a constantly changing world.

BIOGRAPHY
Having graduated with an MA in Cinematography in 2003, Nikolay Stefanov has experimented with different visual styles and forms in his cinematography work for films, series, and TV. He made his directing debut with two mid-length documentaries in 2016 and 2018. Tackling important and sensitive social topics, No Place for You in Our Town (2022) is his first feature-length documentary, having its world premiere in the Next:Wave competition at CPH:DOX 2022. The film has also been selected for Vision du Réel and Movies that Matter, and other renowned festivals. Nikolay Stefanov’s next documentary, Making Friends with the Idea of a Father (2023), is in development and is a part of the 2022 EURODOC program.
