In 2002, Giovanni Princigalli first met Aida’s family, who lived in their isolated Roma community on the outskirts of Bari. Aida was still a teenager at the time and dreamed of a career as a model and singer and of a better life outside the camp. Twenty years later, she is a mother and wife. Neglected by her husband, she suffers from depression and wants to get a divorce, which leads to a conflict with her family.
LA CHANSON D’AIDA explores 20 years of Aida’s struggle for emancipation, independence, and a better life. Through her story, the film offers a close insight into an Italian Roma community affected by persistent poverty, prejudice and marginalisation.
