Rwema, Grace, Mizero and Ernest were children when the Rwandan genocide took place in 1994. They remember only vaguely this dark chapter of their country’s history and the suffering their parents endured. In the presence of the camera, the generations come together and, in the encounter, search for ways to talk about their family histories. Memories are shared, stories come to light, and the dead are remembered. A process of healing and reconciliation begins.

KUMVA – CE QUI VIENT DU SILENCE tells of the need to break the silence, speak about the unspeakable and build bridges between the past and the present. With her gentle and patient way of the camera, Sarah Mallégol creates a film that itself becomes part of the process of coming to terms with the past.
