At the edge of a forest, a device is constructed from generators, large quantities of light bulbs, barrels and corrugated iron sheets. It’s time to wait for nightfall and hope that the traps will attract the coveted prey, the exact whereabouts of which are never known. Will the hunters have to move on and try their luck elsewhere?

GRASSHOPPER REPUBLIC follows a group of young men in Uganda who hope to make a quick buck by catching grasshoppers. But this endeavour comes at a price, as the UV light used in the process is harmful to the environment and people’s health. Told not only from the perspective of humans but also through the grasshoppers’ point of view, the film reflects on the collective impact of human behaviour on nature.
