A few years ago, archaeological excavations in Lagos in southern Portugal unearthed a huge 15th Century rubbish dump. In it were found also the human remains of more than 150 men, women and children, some of them in chains. Genetic analysis confirmed that these were the skeletons of Africans who had been brought to Portugal by slave traders. Now, the site shall be turned into a multi-storey car park and a mini-golf course.
In her essay film CONTOS DO ESQUECIMENTO, Dulce Fernandes meticulously explores this dark past of Portuguese and European colonial history. Her film counteracts the forgetting and erasure of the slave trade from the collective consciousness.

BIOGRAPHY
Portuguese filmmaker, born in Angola and living between Lisbon and New York. Her work is focused on Portugal’s colonial past, the collective construction of memory and its reverberations in the present. Her film – making work has been supported by Brouillon d’un rêve documentaire (La Scam, France), Portuguese Film Institute (ICA), Portuguese National Television (RTP), Portuguese Society of Authors (SPA) and the Creative Media program. She has studied film at the School of the Art Institute (Chicago), Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television (Cuba) and the Downtown Community Television Center (New York); she holds a master’s degree in International Relations (City University of New York). Selected by La Scam as an IDFAcademy participant in 2021. Tales of Oblivion (2023 , 63 minutes) is her second feature film.
