BALKAN BEATS BERLIN – CULTURAL RECYCLING
Marco Valic | Germany 2005 | 42 Min. | OmdU
As young people they came from Ex-Jugoslavia to Germany. Dudging the authorities that send back most refugees after the war, they now founded families in Berlin. Robert, Tatjana and Alen tell their stories about war, arrival and integration in a foreign country and life with one’s past. Robert organizes the now famous BalkanBeats-partys in Berlin and tells us about how it all started as a protest against the war in the early 90‘s. His wife Tatjana found herself between all frontiers during the war. In Berlin she works in a Theatre and sings in a group that interprets traditional bulgarian choir singing. Their friend Alen is a photographer and tries to bring his own refugee background into his work.
Following the protagonist’s paths, the dynamic, direct and honest film takes us to places of Berlin nightlife where it’s all about „Mi plesemo“ (we are dancing) and where people of all nations are welcome.
