8th ETHNOCINECA
International Documentary Film Festival Vienna 2014
Mo, 12. – Fr, 16. May 2014
This year we proudly presented to you the 8th edition of ethnocineca – Ethnographic and Documentary Filmfest Vienna. From May 12th – 16th the Votiv Kino, located at the heart of Austria’s capital, became the hotspot for ethnographic and documentary filmmaking.
53 films from all parts of the world covered a large variety of perspectives on cinematic approaches, aesthetic styles and ethnographic methods on social and cultural topics, which are often dismissed in popular media. This year’s carefully selected program challenged stylistic boundaries of formal categories and allowed artistic, as well as scientific perspectives, to coexist. We are proud to say, that once again the cinema was turned into a meeting space designed for exchange, reflexion and dialogue between filmmakers and the audience – offering an alternative to institutionalized discourses.
For the first time ever in 2014, young filmmakers also got the chance to compete for the ethnocineca Student Shorts Award (ESSA). In a more traditional manner we presented to you the results of the Projektwerkstatt film workshopand a fabulous closing party at the legendary Club U on Friday, May 16th – the last day of the film fest. Finally, we would like to thank all of you film enthusiasts, who turn the film fest into what it is today – a wonderful, creative and inspiring event for all of us!
