PART OF THE SHORT FILM PROGRAMME ESSA I
Austrian Premiere
Rusty shipwrecks under a glaring sun bear witness to the rapid and inexorable disappearance of the Aral Sea. The former seabed has become a desert. First the water disappeared, with it the fish and then the birds. Only the people have remained and continue to live in this place that is as unreal as it is inhospitable. After all, home is home, and those who remain dream of setting sail once again.
Through various cinematic textures ARALKUM interweaves the Aral desert with its inhabitants and examines how to deal with the catastrophic consequences of climate change. In skillfully montage, the film makes us think about man’s relationship with nature.
