Starting from Porto Maurizio on the Ligurian coast, three friends explore the fabled history of the Mediterranean Sea that connects Christian and Islamic countries and has been and still is the scene of conflicts. A television series produced by Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi, adventure films in black and white, and excerpts from the history of film inform these reflections.
A CUSTOM OF THE SEA combines archival footage with new analog footage to create a narrative about the Mediterranean composed of chance encounters and anecdotes, and poses pressing questions about Eurocentrism, colonial history, and religiously motivated conflicts.

BIOGRAPHY
Fabrizio Polpettini studied visual arts and environmental sciences in Milan, film production in Paris and documentary filmmaking in Corsica. In 2009 he created Filmcaravan, an open-air film festival, and in 2014 he founded La Bête, a creative documentary production bureau.
