Der 58-Jährige Martin erinnert sich an seinen eineinhalbjährigen Aufenthalt in der Sowjetunion im Jahr 1979. Seine Eltern, Aktivist*innen der kommunistischen Partei, dachten, der damals 15-Jährige käme so in eine Gesellschaft, die ihrer Ideologie entspricht. Doch schnell beginnt in Astrakan das kommunistische Ideal von Glanz und Glorie zu bröckeln. Desillusioniert bricht er die Schule ab, schläft auf Parkbänken und verliebt sich mehrmals. Vierzig Jahre später teilt Martin zum ersten Mal seine Geschichte mit seinem Sohn, die bis heute ein Tabu in der Familie war.
ASTRAKAN 79 widmet sich dem Moment zwischen Vater und Sohn an der Schwelle zum Erwachsenwerden und wie sich Wertvorstellungen im Laufe eines Lebens eingebettet in ein politisch aufgeladenes Umfeld wandeln.

BIOGRAPHY
Catarina Mourão studied music, law and film (MA at Bristol University and PhD at Edinburgh University, FCT scholarship in both). Founder of AporDoc (Association for the Portuguese Documentary). She teaches Cinema and Documentary since 1998 in different Masters. In 2000 she creates Laranja Azul with Catarina Alves Costa, an independent film production company. It is in this context that she directs her films which have always been awarded and shown in international festivals. Her main areas of research are documentary, memory, dream, archive and autobiography. Her PhD film “A toca do Lobo” was released theatrically all over Portugal and premiered at The Rotterdam International Film Festival.
